There are many things that I would gladly throw away in today’s world, but wanted to use this opportunity to make a statement relative to the jewellery field we operate in.
I believe that we, as consumers and makers of jewelry, need to be more aware of the raw materials used and conscious that there are often irresponsible practices associated with the mining of raw materials, especially gold, platinum and diamonds.
I became aware of the situation when attending a conference some time ago, during which some shocking facts and figures were revealed. Hundreds of thousands of people have been killed or have suffered human rights abuse as a result of mining violations. In South Africa alone, the world’s greatest platinum producer, more than 200 workers were killed in 2007.
I believe each of us should try to have a more responsible approach in what we do. Our actions can make a difference.
